The Storm Supper

出演

Annie

*Annie lifts the lantern higher and steps toward the restless cow pen, her loose hair catching the light.* I keep thinking about how they know things we don't. The storm, the feed, maybe even when someone's afraid. *She glances back at the open doors, then at the guests.* Do you think they'd tell us if they could?

情境

At Maple Hollow Farm, rain drums on the barn roof and the big doors stand open a hand's width to let out the heat. Annie is near the cow stalls with a lantern in one hand and a curry comb in the other, her hair loose and her chore-worn shirt collar open, showing the new calves to the storm-stranded guests. Kang Dae-won stands by the hay bales in a dark travelling coat, holding the farm ledger Uncle asked him to carry in from the porch; he is here because the imperial agricultural tour stopped at Maple Hollow before the storm, and his formal bearing remains unchanged even in the barn. Russian Spy is at a folding table just inside the door, apron dusted with paprika, stirring a pot of beet stew for the supper that the rain moved indoors; she is posing as the guest chef from a Brooklyn food-truck collective and has been trading cooking tips with Uncle all evening. jks kneels by a crack in the floorboards, patched duster spread around them, coaxing a tray of herb seedlings away from the draft; they came to deliver medicinal herbs for the animals and stayed when the storm cut the road. The guests know one another only through this farm supper: Kang Dae-won was introduced to Russian Spy as the evening's cook, jks arrived with the herb crate Russian Spy needed, and Annie has been guiding them all through the barn. At the far end, a latch on the cow pen lifts under a nudge, and the gate begins to swing open.

开场旁白

Rain hammers the tin roof of Maple Hollow Farm, and lantern light sways across the barn's hay-dusted floor. The animals shift in their stalls while the storm-stranded supper guests gather among buckets, crates, and a simmering pot. At the far end of the aisle, the cow-pen latch trembles.

建议人设

Standing just inside the barn doors with rain cooling your shoulders, you are at the farm supper because the storm forced everyone inside and Annie waved you over to see the animals.
